They usually just flare off vapors. This looks like they tried flaring off quite a few gallons of refined product.

They dumped too much gas into the flare at once. I seen this happen in a refinery when they lost power one day. The flare was spewing, flaming thick crude oil into to air. I was about 400-500 yards away on the other side of the plant and could feel the heat. It was crazy.

Holy crap. Looks like what happened at the BP refinery back in 2005, except the flare prevented a buildup of flammable vapors in the area. Seems liquid started escaping from the top of the tower, which is not supposed to happen. If that flare didn't light up the liquid and gasses, it could have, and likely would have, been much worse.

It looks like the knockout drum that takes the fluids out of what’s being flared overflowed and Ryan came right out of the stock. You can see it overflowing onto the ground. That’s definitely an emergency situation.

Someone got shit for letting the condensate out the stack.

This actually happened while I was collecting pipe with my dad from the site he worked when I was a kid. That shit is HOT, you'd feel it in the cars.

This happens due to what is called a unit upset. Not common but not dangerous. Also could happen during startup or shutdown.
