I don't understand why someone would be mean about the fact you are learning another language. You are making an effort to try to talk to someone in their own language. It takes time and skill to be bilingual.

Lift someone up instead of putting them down. Help someone learn. And yes, English is not my first language. So if you have suggestions, feel free to lift me up as well.

The key difference between you and your mom is immersion. Your mom built her fluency by jumping headlong into an English-speaking environment. She married a man who only spoke English, and became part of an English-speaking community. I think if you lived in Mexico, especially if you lived with your Spanish-speaking relatives, you'd be absolutely fluent and comfortable in Spanish within a year
