Thank you for this. I’ve been pretty fascinated by how the heat have been able to have such success and hide lesser defenders like Herro/Leonard in the zone. I saw the Raptors game this week where they were in zone for the majority of the game and had a ton of success. I feel like Carlisle was doing this years ago and some killed him for being gimmicky, but now because of the Heat/Raptors/Mavs seems like every team is adding a little bit of zone to their defensive arsenal.

Good breakdown!

Each Zone is strong in one way, weak in another.
The way the Jazz were spaced was wrong for beating a 2-3 Zone.
They are literally playing into Miami's hands...

Whenever you see a 2-3 Zone, you have to use a 1-3-1 Offense.

Effectively :
1 at Slot, 1 at High Post, 3 beyond the Arc.
This essentially allows an "overload" and takes the Weakside Wing out of the equation. 👍

It is the Scissors to the 2-3 Zone's Paper.

But NBA teams, coaches, players are undone by it!

Kudos to the Heat! 😅

Defense is all coaching, Coach Spo just doesn't get enough credit

People don’t understand it’s not the defense it’s the personal

Thanks for the great breakdown! The Heat do a lot of smart things in their zone. The one area I might adjust is how the guards often push the ball side when it is on top. Turning it middle might decrease penetration. The Sixers ball screened the guard and attacked the guard/corner gap and got some good opportunities. I think zones, when played correctly with smart adjustments, are a great response to analytic basketball: layups and threes. Also, the spread screen roll and dribble drive create double gaps and triple gaps that cause serious issues for the best man defenses. You can’t create those gaps against zones.

The 2-3 Zone is good for helping players that would often get beat on Man to Man coverage good break down it also helps support weak rebounding Teams 👍

My coach said this is one of the most BASIC and FUNDAMENTAL defense tactics in basketball
Can see the Heat plays pretty much simple :))

Nice analysis. Would love for you to analyze the Knicks defenses Jordan played against in 92 and 93.

Here in Philippines 2 - 3 zone is the most common defense used here in street 5 on 5 streetball or in amateur provincial league

street ball here in the Philippines always use zone defense, we call it, 2-3 defense. No wonder, their PhilAm coach use that effectively. Filipino coaching style.

How are their rebounding numbers out of zone? At the high school level, we really struggle to rebound out of a 23 as compared to man

Yes, you said it best thanks, you need to keep setting screens to beat this defense and it's not done as much to the heat also credit to heat to beat the screens
