I've been listening to one Raag or another recorded by you everyday for a bit over a month. What you are doing is incredible. I know what it is like to dedicate hours and hours of life to a special quest. Thanks.

Alaap (0:00) – The slow, free-rhythm introduction of the raga. It explores the notes and mood of the raga without percussion.

Jod (15:25) – A transition phase where rhythm is introduced but still without percussion. It has a steady pulse and gradually builds intensity.

Gamak ka Jod (23:10) – "Gamak" refers to a style of ornamentation involving oscillations between notes. This section adds expressiveness and energy to the Jod.

Chand ka Jod (28:48) – "Chand" (meaning "rhythmic patterns") suggests a more structured rhythmic development within the Jod, possibly with complex phrasing.

Jhala (32:10) – The final, fast-paced section, characterized by rapid, repeated strokes (in stringed instruments) and increasing intensity before concluding the performance.

What really slaves me about this instrument, which is sort of the equivalent of a baritone guitar, is that those two enormous, and either end of the instrument are exactly that. The instrument maker/Gardner makes a shape out of clay and fires it up so that it has strength. If the appropriate moment, the farmer gently places the gourd that is growing in the garden inside the clay pot and allows it to grow into the exact configuration that you see here in this video. When the time is right, they gently break the clay and release the now perfectly formed gourd. The gourd is dried and holes are punched in the bottom, and when the time is right, the entire inside of the now super dried gourd is hollowed out and dried further. At a certain point in time, they begin to flip the outside of the dried vegetable causing it to ring out at a certain tonality and pitch. When everything is in tune, they set the gorgeous side and begin to work on other parts of the instrument. Now there's a reason why this is important. Can you imagine a Steinway piano factory in the middle of the very very wet monsoon season of India you can't do it. It just wouldn't be able to be done. And for the same reason, a Gord like this could never be grown in northern Europe because the growing season is simply too short and these things can't be rushed. Now in the science and social art of anthropology, we look at two things. The first thing is, what is the overarching narrative, worldwide, that causes each and every culture of the world, no matter how remote, no matter how large or small, no matter how successful or grim the environment must be to have the undeniable but insistent desire to make musical instruments and then to compose songs that in turn affect the culture for hundreds of thousands of years? And by the same token, what is it about each and every individual culture in the world that allows them to take this energy, if you will, and make instruments that are absolutely perfect and in keeping with the environment from which they come.

You see, you can't make musical instruments unless you have this worldwide, overwhelming desire to create, with the materials at hand musical instruments that can be played, and can last long enough to develop a voice and history of their own.

Simply sublime, Ms Pal. Sometimes the UTube algorithm sends us something almost other worldly. I saw an unforgetable 3 hour rudra veena concert at Sydney University more than 50 years ago, I think the artist's name was Ustad Asad Ali Khan. I look forward to more of your superb artistry.

The roaring sounds of Lord Rudra and his vina.
There's no other instrument quite like the low bass sounds like this... The reverberations are astounding... Imagine being the one playing this in between 2 giant gourds.. Thank you.

Watching your approach and focus to every note is to me what separates you from most musicians, elevating you into the pantheon of the absolute elite. I had never heard nor seen this instrument before this past weekend, but it has inspired me to become the musician I am determined to be (I play percussion). Thank you for sharing and for your inspiration.

Your playing is phenomenal. The instrument has a truly beautiful tone. It gives me hope to see your dedication in continuing the art of the rudra vina. There are so few masters of this instrument left. Thank you for sharing this on youtube where we can all enjoy it. Also thank you for the excellent video quality. It is very helpful for other musicians to be able to see your technique clearly and close up. I do not play the rudra vina, but watching your technique is still very instructive for me.
