Bear McCreary collaborated with legendary Heavy Metal vocalist Jens Kidman and drummer Gene Hoglan for the "The Ballad of Damrod." The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power returns August 29 on Prime Video.

About The Rings of Power Season 2: Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.

For all the hate that this show gets, you cannot deny that the music is absolutely on point.

When you said “Heavy metal in Middle Earth” my eyebrow raised in question… but seeing the teaser with the scene it might be pulled off well here. Bear is extremely talented so I well have to trust him

Interesting that they gave the troll a name of a Ranger of Ithilien from the books

A lot of uncertainty in the comments so far whether metal is appropriate for Middle-earth. I hope the following (quick!) summary may help.

If you look at the formations of various sub-metal genres you'll notice that Tolkien's works have consistently influenced songs (look at the song lists for various Blind Guardian and Rush albums), albums (BG's 'Nightfall in Middle-earth', and band names (e.g. Burzum, Gorgoroth, Amon Amarth). Non-diagetically, metal has played a big part in the legacies of Middle-earth. The sounds and aesthetics of metal, and the genre's harnessing of Romantic sounds and aesthetics (e.g. power and intensity) further correlate with various elements of Middle-earth. Forget the comical hill-trolls from 'The Hobbit' and imagine the immense power that they could wield in war is given the chance (think even more intimidating than the armoured trolls in Jackson's 'The Return of the King'). What instruments and sonic scapes could possibly capture/reflect THAT kind of troll? Brass instruments and other symphonic timbres can only go so far (even in Hans Zimmer's recent scores) so the next step is genre, specifically metal: power, intensity, aggression. Bear's recently brought out a metal album and (I'm assuming!) was working on it in tandem with RoP s2. The sounds of metal music may not sound like the 'symphonic' and 'choral' sounds that reiterations and adaptations of Middle-earth have imprinted on us. I'm not dissing the existing music, Howard Shore's scores is what inspired me to be a musician and there are some stunning scores in games and other films! But if I were to think of Shore's scores, the guttural utterances throughout Moria, the highly dissonant (aleatoric) music Shore employs to represent various creatures (Watcher in the Water, Goblin Town, Shelob, Balrog etc.) and aggressive pounding on percussion instruments (Isengard's theme that metamorphoses into Mordor's theme). Although there isn't any screaming, or distorted guitars, or intense and rapid bass drums being hammered consistently, Shore was (perhaps unknowingly?) utilising a lot of elements of metal music to portray VARIOUS fragments of Middle-earth - not just the villains.

I hope this helps. I understand the uncertainty, but the foundations of metal music have been there for a while. 'The Ballad of Damrod' is adding to an existing tradition within and outside of Middle-earth 😃

Say what you will about the show, but Bear's musical scores have been UNBELIEVABLE. I still listen to the S1 score almost weekly, and I have not watched the show since its release.

Bear is truly the next Howard Shore. His amazing music in Rings of power far outweighs any criticisms about the plot or acting
