This actually still doesn't explain why you do this partwise definition, it just rewords it.
The actual reason could either be said with complex numbers: (Oh look, there's Pi!)
But that isn't really intuitively understandable, at least for me.
…or with flipping the graph back and forth: The integral of -fn(x) is zero minus the integral of fn(x). So you then calculate the integral from -b to -a of -fn(x), which is in the example I used above: (-ln(2))-(-ln(3))=0.4054651081, then negate that and you get -0.4054651081.
