LEGO is NOT MORE EXPENSIVE?

Perhaps the biggest LEGO shilling in history occurred over the weekend in an article on Brickset where the writer claimed that in 30 years the price of LEGO sets hasn't really changed. Price Per Piece as a sole evaluation of a LEGO set's value is flawed and will only become more flawed as LEGO pieces stop shrinking and prices keep rising. There are many concrete examples of LEGO Star Wars sets going UP in price such as Battle Packs going from $10 in 2007 to $20 in 2022. The UCS Death Star Playset's $100 price increase in 2016. LEGO Collectible Minifigures were $2 in 2010, they're now $5...

OMG I FORGOT TO WEAR MY BLOG BOY SHIRT :(

Do YOU think LEGO is more expensive now?

Honestly. They should’ve let the current sets finish their lifetime on shelves with their old prices. Increasing prices on sets that have already been available for cheaper is beyond infuriating when the average income has not increased. If they want to make future sets more expensive, understandable. But don’t touch what’s already existent !

The most tone deaf move by lego is going back to existing sets and increasing the price. The Justifier was palatable but increasing whats already on shelves? Just doesn't look good from a Company already making insane profits. Its put some sets out of reach for me, an existing customer.

I like Jang’s price per volume assessment. How much “toy” do you get for your money? Simple and often gives a fair answer.

Lego fanboys defend the company no matter what crappy decisions they make. They over charge, lazy minifigures, and not caring about their fans but people still try to defend them. I’m glad a creator isn’t afraid to call them out

Lego is not more expensive. It was always expensive

Yes it's more expensive that being said that's not the part that makes me mad it's the fact they upped the prices of sets that's been on the market for awhile now. 😑

Forget price per piece, I only use price per stud to determine the value of a set. Total clutch power determines how good a set is.

Price per piece is a completely arbitrary metric. Price per Gram makes more sense but it's still nonsensical. Buy something if you like it and are willing to pay the price. That's all.

I’d like to add in during Covid 19 lockdown people were buying more legos, increasing demand and causing Lego to increase prices as well. I’d like to think/hope that now demand has gone down and Lego will change this trend.

Another great example: Obi-wan's Jedi Starfighter ($30) and retired Anakin's Jedit Starfighter ($20)

Mark Stafford had an interview and one of the points he makes is that he used smaller technic axles and that RAISED the price already set before he designed.
He thought a bigger axle would bring up the price BUT it was the smaller axle that actually raised the price.
He found out it was where it was made, the particular factory, the older mold, shipping parts from that factory, all factored into price.

So even weight of the item can't be a true measure.

Lego makes parts all at different factories, much like components on electronics and appliances, etc. From various places around the world, then put together in one place and this process done right can lower costs for those companies.
So Lego does the same, and you factor in new molds, new printed parts, new graphics being done, the way they marketed it, the licensing agreements that we know NOTHING about how much the deal they made with Disney, etc.
The bank loans they get, the interest rates we know nothing about, that can fluctuate.
The raw material costs. The employees and designers with different salaries (raises, benefits, etc.), the overhead on all their properties, etc.
And much more, put into an equation to get to a price is something we cannot know all the details about.

Best to collect what you REALLY like, not for aftermarket, DON'T be a completest and truly enjoy the hobby.
Big sets you want, truly sacrifice and save, and in few months, you can own that big UCS set.

I do this, I look for deals, save over time and have been a happier collector for it.
I even sell some sets that I loved, I just takes good pics and keep those as mementos of my collection.
Car and motorcycle collectors do this all the time.
Don't let the price increases ruin your love of the hobby. There's ways to sacrifice, trade, sell and SAVE to get the kits you REALLY want.
It's much better that way.

People like to talk about how expensive Star Wars is but look at lego city that's an original Lego theme without licensing and every set is incredibly overpriced

With lego increasing their prices I would expect a much more higher quality product with a lot more care and attention, to me I’m not paying for only the best is good enough anymore. Now you’ll have misprinted and cracked figures, scratched parts, and inaccurate details in sets that could be fixed with a click on the internet. And yes a lot of their sets are great but with others it’s a hit or miss on quality.

The problem is “bang for your buck” price goes up but the builds feel smaller or increased prices on sets already out. Like the bad batch Lego set is 100 dollars but the shuttle is so small compared to the rest of the set. It doesn’t feel like 100 bucks. There are a lot of sets that just don’t justify the price (not price for piece but the size)

As I see it LEGO wants to become a premium product and with this comes price increases 18+ sets for example are terrible value for what you receive but it's "premium" product. People shouldn't pay for something blindly and just be a consumer. Buy what you want and don't overpay for something just because you can.

I was so hyped for this video after you talked about it on stream yesterday, and it’s amazing how Brickset has embarrassed themselves. It’s likely this article was written by the LAN

I'm in Australia, majority of the new sets that had the price jacked up, price per piece is now .18c- .20c +

Lego has gotten too expensive to afford, like I used to. Sets I would have otherwise bought are now out of price range. I saw a set at Target for $70, the Barn and Farm Lego City set, and it only comes with 230 pieces. Not sure if it was a misprint but these price hikes are driving me to other brands, regardless of quality.

Everything has gone up in price since 2000. Dramatically. Gas went from under $2 to over $4. Inflation is the highest it’s been in over 40 years. Everything is expensive at this point. The thing is, the product is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. As long as we buy Lego products, it’s likely that they’ll consistently increase in price.
