This is wonderful! Gonna have to recap this tomorrow at my piano! Great inspiration for teaching my students aswell!

I get that the chromatic Minor to minor don't really fit in with this arrangement, I have always seen those kinds of reharms like a modern touch. Maybe it will work better in that kind of environment?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention his fantastic use of triads over a pedal tone.
Another great Chick device.

Another great lesson, Tony.
I had to laff when you said 'l don't analyze everything, sometimes things just sound good.
I'm a guitar player and l HAVE to analyze piano players. You guys play the coolest stuff.
To that end, l have been endlessly analyzing Chick's version of 'The Great Pumpkin Waltz'.
Someone transcribed it and I've learned the intro and the head on guitar. Except for the occasional, necessary octave change, it's pretty much note-for-note.
The intro, in particular, fascinates me.
Being a guitarist, l just wouldn't play anything like that. For instance, the way he treats lV chords - nothing crazy - just straight up Lydian ideas but, SO cool.
If you get a chance and are so inclined, maybe you could take a look at it.
Either way, thanks for the very awesome lessons.
I've always loved your teaching style.

Question on the diminished scale (which ALWAYS confuses me): at 5:54 or so you play what looks like and E-flat diminished (which doesn't make sense over an E-diminished chord) and then at about 6:07 you play what I think is the actual E-diminished scale. Both sort of sound okay, but clearly one is "correct" from the theory standpoint. Which one is it? ... and, as always, thanks so much for the insight-packed lessons. Just terrific stuff that keeps me at the piano for hours of happiness.

ooops! I should have been more patient. I saw that immediately after that, you made the correct scale (E-diminished) clear. Sorry for the unnecessary post.
