Drawing Boxes: Getting More Advanced

Sorry about reuploading this - there was an issue that caused my video editing software to throw my footage's audio out of sync, and youtube doesn't allow you to switch out a video cleanly.

So a long while ago, I uploaded a remarkably popular video, aptly named "How to Draw a Box". This video doesn't replace it, but expands on some of the topics and introduces an exercise that you can apply in a few ways to train your understanding of 3D space. Be ready to make a lot of mistakes though, because it's tough.

What you'll need:
- One black pen (ideally a fineliner/felt tip pen)
- 3-4 (or more!) coloured ballpoint pens
- A ruler (optional, you may wish to freehand the lines with the ghosting technique instead)

This exercise can also be done digitally, though I still recommend doing it in ink on paper.

This exercise is gold ! And after going through chapter 6, I can say it's kind of relaxing doing this with a ruler
I didn't know i would enjoy that

8:30 15:55 Just to add for those who don't know what ghosting is exactly; you're supposed to aim for starting at the first point and really try stopping at the second - to be as precise as you can. At least while practicing it pays off to be super focused!
Of course it's going to be tough going quickly enough that your line isn't wobbly, while keeping on the line and not over- or undershoot it, but failing (as said in this video) will be happening, and that's how you learn! So keep at it and don't let yourself stop caring for accuracy!

Great tutorial!

For anyone that struggles to understand how to do this: for your first try just copy the exact box Uncomfortable does (with a ruler) and do it step by step with the video. That should help! :D

13:30 Instead of "accuracy", was the word you were looking for "tolerance"? 🐨

This video is so long that it's hard to focus. I like that you cover drawing concepts that most other Art Youtubers won't cover but I wish things were summarized. Still, thanks for sharing. I'll try to take the time to see if I can understand everything.

I noticed that a link to this video first pops up during the Bluetooth Speaker Demo of Lesson 6, and I was wondering if the content in this video is only something you want us to be aware of when going through the lessons, or to actually have a go at it as well? And if so how many do you recommend to do?

I did not get the last part. When you subdivide, the lines that you draw that pass through the center of the place have to share one set of vanishing points, right? (as thought as they were boxes...well they are)

I did not get specifically the pink box. It looks like it goes to differents vanishing points.

Is this just additional or how much should I do of it? Probably until I see big improvements

Would it be ok, if I want to do some subdivided boxes for the 250 Box Challenge? I'm on the last 50 boxes.

The word you were using in context of rounding up/down, is significant figures I think.

Not asking for 250 of these?

I'm actually surprised

Why do most of your lines have a space in the middle where the line fades out? :O Just wondering.

This assignment is very interesting and fun, but I don't think I fully understand the alma mater of the assignment due to the unstable YouTube translation system.

This seems to be practicing dividing a box into multiple exact proportions, can you pay special attention to it or explain it again to see what it is for?

As an additional explanation, during this exercise, most of the lessons I have done in DRAWABOX seem to have helped me understand with intuitive explanations rather than mathematical methods when helping understanding 3D objects.

But this training seems more'accurate' and'calculated'
What can be expected of the effect of doing this in practice?

As a result, I ask again because I want to work on the assignment with an accurate sense of goal.

damn, im stumped on this one, and what exactly is the excercise homework? just a couple? a hundred?

Is the goal to just keep subdividing the boxes?

"If you're in it to practice the ghosting method, you practice the bloody ghosting method." One cool teach right here

I'm so sorry but after 24:18 when you subdivided the box again I don't understand :( I can't even see the lines :(
