Question word WHY and how to use it in English

"why" is a question word.

We use "why" to ask about reasons and explanations. Example: Why is the sky blue?

We use question word "why" in many situations:
"why" in indirect questions - Example: The manager asked me why I was late.
"why" can be used as a short reply to an affirmative statement.
"why not?" can be used as a short reply to a negative statement.
"why not?" can also be used to accept a suggestion or invitation.
The expression "why on earth" is used to express our shock or surprise at something.
"Why don't you.." is a way of making a suggestion or giving an invitation.
