AMD VS Intel was really both companies playing the customer

AMD started as 2nd supplier IN 1980's, but, its no longer the case now, they started developing their own micro processor chips.

The military has done this forever, they are an entity that if they need something they need it. Grumman developed the F4F Wildcat but GM was also granted contracts to produce Grumman's design, because they needed a lot of them. This was the case with numerous things the military needed or needs.

I don't think that's true. I am pretty sure it was IBM who forced them to license 8086 to other manufacturers, because they didn't want Intel to get greedy with the pricing of their CPU and actually compete with other companies. One was AMD but other notable ones were Fujitsu, NEC, Siemens and others.

Thank god that “ARM” and “RISC” architecture exists. These architecture s will either kill intel or force intel invest heavily/and aggressively into chip development just like how AMD is right now.

Second sourcing is about the what ifs . What if Intel went bankrupt or an enemy bomb blew up Intel's main factory . Military and others still need replacement chips for their weapons . Hence a second source of chips that plug into the same boards with no redesign or recoding needed . This happpened up to 486 . For 586 and up, AMD chips were no longer identical and might need software changes . From 686 and up, sockets also stopped matching . However there's now a Chinese second source for AMD chips .

Intel left the military businesss in the early 90’s. Because the scale was too small. Intel failed when they went woke around 2014/15 Dedicated over 100 million dollars in diversity and equity. As supposed to capacity technology and performance as a company. At that time they rested on their 3 generation lead which now has totally flipped. A good lesson for many companies
