Just a thought. Even if you put a "vibrating" hand control in the fist of a "onshore" or "better stable platform" person, you STILL will not get the full just of the sea state. Some maniac behind the joy stick can't feel the robot slam down after cresting a wave so the life of the vessel much less it's electronics will be short lived if not have a catastrophic failure and just end up in the landfill. Automation might seem like a stopgap way to free up humans to do other tasks or even expand ones role during a mission. Yep, I'm the dude sitting in the back of the room shaking my head at all this "automation" stuff. The same guy who did this during the thought behind communications automation. When we take away the personal interaction of any kind of maritime intervention where Mr Taxpayer (aka, Joe Boater) could count on a human to find'em or show up when they needed a tow, we are just dumbing ourselves down. Once you loose that respect, it's hard to get it back. Just like in the comms world, I see us as just being lazy.
