When Johnny was 16 years old he showed up at an Al black nightclub where BB King was playing and asked if he could play with him!!! BB said you probably don’t know my music and Johnny said I know every song!!! He used to like to tell the story because he actually got a standing ovation from an all black audience!!!!

I read somewhere that B.B. King stated that out of all the electric blues guitarists who became rockstars in the 60's, Johnny Winter was the only one that got the Chicago blues right.

Great Video! Loved Johnny (saw him perform twice, twenty years apart, 1977 and 1997)! His 'Third Degree' release is a Master Class on how to build solos. His solo on 'Last Night' is another! His slide playing was also stellar (and hard to duplicate because of his well-developed, hybrid picking technique)! RIP JDW III

I absolutely love the approach here. So many videos on YouTube with players who have already learned whatever they are showing note-for-note saying "watch me, it's easy...." and we all get lost. (Well, I do.) But THIS I can really work with. Show me the gist of it, the flavour and the approach, and I can pick it up and find my way in! Thank you!

Not only was he fast but he was tasty and he sang at the same time. I think he and Rory Gallagher are grossly underrated! And before anyone gets their boxing gloves on what I mean is when you get these top 10 BS lists you never find these guys on it. Criminal!

It makes total sense that at some point in his soloing on this song Johnny goes into B.B. King mode, because "Be Careful With a Fool" was actually written by B.B. King and Johnny undoubtedly knew B.B.'s repertoire inside out! (He also knew Muddy Waters' material like the back of his hand, btw).

I saw him play in a small club in the early 90’s . I was right in front; killer experience!

This is one super instructive video. This is the stuff you need to know to just noodle around on your own and spend countless hours of quality alone time. It shows where to start, play through the changes, change up the speed and finish. Thanks again, Tim.

TY for bringing this concept out. Blues is an art form. It isn't paint by number. So many people just don't get it and try copying everything note for note. That is not the blues. I always approached learning solos just the way you have shown here. Nothing worse than listening to some cat hacking away at someone else's solo note for note.

That's great stuff Tim. You can steadily just keep on rocking the blues with those little sweet ism's.. loved the video. 🎸🎸💯✌️😎

Actually Johnny’s 1st album was not the one pictured - it was “Progressive Blues Experiment” either 1968 or early ‘69.

I like your way presenting ideas while leaving room for the learner to do their own thing.
