Weasel words: "It is estimated that". Passive voice is often used to obfuscate responsibility, or in this case, make it sound like it is from an authoritative source without bothering to provide that source.

We are still nowhere near the heatwaves of the 1930s but that contradicts the narrative I guess.

Cities are an abomination to humankind. I'm fine with this; more warm days, please. I do great in 105, but 10 degrees really sucks. Moreover, think of the longer growing seasons for the tundra, Canada, and those large tracts of land all over the world that are sparsely populated, in part due to the short growing seasons.
