What's the most cringe worthy thing you've seen an adult do? 🤨😑
I used to work at the Walmart portrait studio, and one day I listened to a set of parents explain to a foster child that she wasn’t their “real child," which was why she couldn’t be in the family photos. I was fuming. My parents were foster parents too, and no matter who stayed with us, they were always in the family photos. We had ten years' worth of pictures with all different kids in them. I politely started making conversation, sharing that my parents were also foster parents, and asked about their experience with DCYF. It turned out I knew their social worker. These parents were awful—they literally called the girl a “little shit” and a “paycheck.” So, I lied and told them that a photo session with foster kids was free and did a full session with her on my dime. It was tough—her hair was greasy, and her clothes didn’t fit—but I tried my best to make her feel special. As soon as they left, I called their social worker. I found out later that she was removed from that home and placed into another. Fast forward, I became a foster parent myself, and at the Christmas party last year, I saw her. She’s grown now, married, happy, and a foster parent too. She got adopted by the next family and told me they still had one of the photos I took. She said I was the first adult to make her feel valuable. You never know the impact you’ll make.
