That voice acting, I could feel the pain.

This is honestly how to create a divergent story the right way. Soul Eater also had the unenviable task of adapting the manga into anime before the manga was completed, but while the climax of that adaptation was rushed, FMA 2003 chose to take creative liberties with its climax in a way that was organic to the source material.

Oh boy Ed.
I still feel bad on how he accidently killed himself when he then had his sprit back in his oringnal body.

It actually makes a lot of sense, I mean, the energy to make alchemy is human souls from the truth door, the philosopher stone is made of thousands of human lives, and it's the greatest amplifier of alchemy.

This scene gave me chills so many years ago... from learning what was on other side of the gate to what powers transmutation

The best plot twist in anime history without a doubt. The Gate in the 2003 series remained a secret throughout, something that has no clear or real explanation. Unlike Brotherhood, where they tell us from the beginning that the "truth" is God and explain what it is (referring to the scene of Edward transmuting his mother and encountering the truth), removing most of the mysteries. In 2003, however, it remained a mystery.

There were too many subtle hints about the other world since the scene where Edward transmutes his mother. When the truth traps him and takes him to see "the truth about alchemy, " we can see "images from our world, even World War II." Something that Edward didn't understand. It is supposed that inside the Gate lies the "truth about alchemy, " but why the history of our world? That's where the questions begin. Then we have examples that Christian religion existed in the FMA world, something that doesn't exist in the manga as stated by Arakawa, also the events of the Black Plague are non-existent, etc. Even Dante mentioned that the Gate is what gives alchemical power in the FMA world in the chapter where Hohenheim is trapped; but at the same time, in that Gate, it's basically purgatory of souls. Souls are energy, that's why the Philosopher's Stone exists, right? Made of souls that enhance alchemy. This seems more coherent than simply coming from Brotherhood's tectonic plates.

A very good symbolism is that the Gate of Truth is based on Dante Alighieri's Gate, thus having a connection with its concepts, like inside the gate there are the seven hells, named after the seven deadly sins. Guess who comes from the gate and have the names of those sins? Right, the "Homunculi." Dante Alighieri also mentions that, by going through hell until reaching the end, you would arrive at the opposite side of the world (technically it would be the exit). This establishes a parallel with FMA's Gate of Truth, where on the other side, there is an exit that leads to a world opposite to FMA's, our own.

"the gap in the door is a separate reality, I'm the real me, are you sure you are the real you?"

Wow even by full metal alchemist point of view our world was a hell on Earth

The voice acting is stellar! The voice actors and the director really deserve an applause for this, it's so hard to make an anime sound natural and/or believeable, but just hear how Vic portrays Ed's conflict, it's absolutely amazing, gives me goosebumps.

I always thought the connection to our real world concept was so cool

2003 needs to be considered an alternate timeline because I love the concept of alchemy using our worlds tragedies as a energy source. Also it’s just cool knowing Edward spent time in another world.

The emotions in this scene hit me even though I really don't have enough context to know what's going on😭😭😭

"But what I don't understand is if you and that evil _bitch_ were so perfect together then _why did you feel the need to marry my mother_ ."

Damn. That line was fucking emotional and brutal.

To this day, I'm still amazed and elated that Scott McNeil is in a Funimation dub.

Man, 2003 is so amazing. It even explains the enthropy in our universe. Everytime something is reversed in FMA universe, it fucks up our universe.

And see how Ed's world view is destroyed. He did the same to Rose in his universe.

Still upset you can only watch brotherhood on Funimation but you can’t watch the 2003 version anywhere (legally). I initially wanted to see the ‘bad’ ending first and then see brotherhood after like someone suggested in a forum, but regardless Im enjoying brotherhood and currently in episode 40. Really like this ending though, it feels like the inevitable reality of what alchemy could do whereas brotherhood is the ideal good ending. It’d be interesting if more anime’s had this kind of “two or more possible endings”
