How good are large prints from iphone photos

In this video, I answer the question of how good are large print from iPhone photos. This is something that I've been trying to find out for a while now.

In this video, I am going to choose a photograph that was taken on an iPhone and I will print it on a large format printer. Printing a large version of the photograph is an ideal way to determine the quality of the camera because all imperfections are amplified when you make a print.

Over the past few years, I've been trying to work out how to carry less photographic equipment when going on long walks, hikes, or camping trips. Up until now, I've been carrying my normal photographic equipment. The problem is that the equipment that I own is very heavy and takes up a lot of space.
This makes it a little bit impractical when you have to walk long distances. It is also very uncomfortable to carry such heavy equipment.
Because of this, I've been considering using my iPhone as my primary camera. Before I do so, I need to see what kind of quality I can get out of its camera.

For me, the deciding factor will be whether I can print a large photograph out of the iPhone and be happy with the result.

If I can find a way to get a good result out of using the iPhone camera, it will mean that I only have to carry the iPhone is my one and only camera which will make things easier to pack as well as more comfortable because I'm not carrying all that heavy equipment with me. The photograph used in this video was taken using the iPhone's native camera app.

The printer used in this video is an Epson 3880

The paper used is
CANSON INFINITY RAG PHOTOGRAPHIQUE 310 GSM - MATTE

Very nice video. Its so nice to know that we iPhone photographers can finally make print worthy shots from our phone photos also. As you rightly pointed out, its not possible to carry bulky camera equipment always and also the best camera is the one that you have with you at the moment. I am sure if shot in the raw format, and then edited iPhone photos will carry much more details and easily be printable. Thanks for this video again.

Oh wow, I have been trying to get prints made of the photos I have taken on my I phone 11 Pro max and have been told that they can only do prints 7”x4” other wise the print quality is not good enough? They all say if they were taken on an iPhone the quality is not good enough. I have 4 yrs worth of photos so this is very encouraging . A huge THANK YOU!

Did you ever post the comparison video ?

It would be great to repeat the comparison with an iphone 14 pro.

Have you tried the iPhone 14 pro yet? (2 yrs since video) I’m going to Ireland and wondering if I can use iPhone 14max pro to print a few photos out for my walls or should I lug the dslr? Most shots will be of ruins, nature, cliffs, castles. (Hard to lug everything out in nature on a road trip, unless you think it’s worth it)

When I travel I have my iphone 10 MAX and my 2012 NIKON D3000. I really need to cut the cord of the huge camera as its such a pain to haul around. When I take pictures I take them to look at when I get home and also I like to print out 8x10 to hang on my wall. The pictures I take with the iphone and print out 8x10 turns out great. Even 12x18 long pics turn out great. Some people say printing out iPhone pics makes the prints distorted, but not in my experience. When I take 1000 pics on my Nikon is takes of about 3GB. Same amount of pics on my iphone takes of 25 gb?? Why is this. When I look at them both and print them both out they look the same. So I have hung onto my Nikon since it takes up so much less space on my 12 year old computer than the iphone pics. Is this a reason to continue to use my dinosaur Nikon?

Hey there! Couple questions, I have some photos that were taken on my canon and then put onto my iPhone. I lost all my original raw/jpeg files all I have is what was transferred to my phone. Do you think that will cause any issues? I’ve never actually printed my photos but would like to start but don’t have a high quality printer do you ever use any online printing services?

What about photographing 8x10” painted canvas for reproduction of art prints 8x10” to 11x14” max.
I have the same iPhone 11 Max, but thinking of upgrading to the latest one instead of getting a new Canon body. Since my canvases are small, do you think the quality for art prints will be good?
