I tore into the code, bought an in-circuit ICD2 header for this chip (it replaces the PIC) and could not reproduce this. Sure enough, 5 for 5 chips would cause the same error, but it would not do it wrong with the ICD2 board in circuit. I contacted the original author and he says I'm the 2nd person to ever report this since 1991 or so. QRPGuys says I'm the first. Clearly others can hear this issue. I've since moved on after buying several more as a sanity check and to make sure there wasn't something wrong with my parts. It's a code issue for sure and I don't have the patience to fix it.

I have the same issue with mine. Only works correctly if I hook it up to a powered portable speaker.
