Oooh, I love how the artist used the gold flag to make a halo for the crucifix.

Im not christian, but seeing a king humbling himself not consumed by riches or greed, going to war, standing for his people like his role model jesus christ is a beautiful thing.

I love how ’Jesus on the cross’ is the only thing that isn’t colored. It’s dark and forgotten. But not by those whom are devoted. Only the king is paying attention to what truly matters. I’m not religious. But this painting moves me.
Edit: ya’ll it’s a painting! Calm down. Tranquilo! Like wow! Art is SUBJECTIVE. Which means what?? Oh! It’s able to be interpreted in different ways depending on who’s looking at the picture. Wow! People have their own opinion on religious ART. Keyword: Art.

Whether you’re religious or not, you’ve gotta admit, old Christian paintings go unbelievably hard. We really have lost some aspects of art when people stopped making art like these.

i’m not even religious, but can appreciate the love and devotion that goes into a piece like this :)

Also love how the civilians are wearing flower crowns, which will inevitably decay, to highlight the king's more permanent crown... and then the realization hits that the dead man's crown is the most eternal of them all (in two ways)

"The Two Crowns" by Frank Dicksee, created in 1900, is one of my all-time favorite paintings. I love it so much that it’s currently my phone wallpaper. ❤

The look of the king is like, "How can I face you after all the things that I have done?". Honor and respect are also there. It is a very humanizing piece.

the way the flag in the background imitates a golden shine is such a creative idea :o

Very moving. In these days where things like this would be ignored, thank you for calling our attention to this. I had never seen this painting before. Bless you!

"no matter how high your crown may put you between your fellow man, it will always be below the crown of thorns"

Such a beautiful painting, i have never been touched by art as deeply as this one.

What alot of people dont know about medieval monarchy is that the kings and queens drew their authority from god and heaven and everyone (including themselves) believed god had given them the role of protecting their people from harm.

I've watched this 1000 times. One of my faves. Please keep doing what you are doing.

I think it’s so beautiful how even the simplest painting can bring people from both religious and non-religious background together. It really is the main reason why I love art so much!

Our pastor recently gave a sermon about what it means to live your life for Christ. He used the illustration of his son playing sports. He was in peewee football (American football played by little kids) and he scored a touchdown. That kid immediately stood up while all the stands and his team were cheering and he looked to find his Dad in the crowd and started waving and making sure he was watching. All those eyes praising him, but the only eyes he cared about were his dad’s.

This painting reminds me of that. Who’s eyes are we playing for? Who’s eyes are we fighting for? Where do we look for affirmation? Who’s opinion actually matters to us? Really powerful.
