Oh this really fucked me up because never at any other point in the game do we hear Curly make those sounds except for when Jimmy is obviously beating him. Despite his extreme pain through all other scenes he's just whimpering in the same ways, but in this instance he's like so shocked at what's happening to him that he yells, goes silent from pain, and then just sobs. One of the most disturbing scenes for me /:

So, for ref if anyone is wondering, it's implied that Jimmy beats curly in private when he gets frustrated

It's so clear Jimmy was beating Curly behind everyone's back, then further torturing him by making Curly choke on the painkillers, Curly might have made a mistake but its still extremely heartbreaking hearing his sobs as he's completely powerless to do anything, knowing full well he could've changed the outcome :(

This explains why curly’s cries get louder as jimmy gets closer to him, more panicked when jimmy is around

The reason Anya freaks out is not just because of the gagging. It is heavily implied that Anya did not willingly get impregnated by Jimmy. She mentions at one point that the doors on the crew cabins lack locks. The gaging sound likely reminds her of the assault Jimmy did to her, and as a result causes the memory to flare up and make her panic.

Poor Anya. She didn't deserve this.

I will say I appreciate from a story telling perspective that Jimmy’s acts of violence are never explicitly shown or stated, but you can still infer what happened. For me it instills a sense of dread and uneasiness that I probably wouldn’t feel if they went the full shock value route and just showed us the violence straight up. It makes it feel more realistic. The gore and disturbing imagery is saved for the metaphor stuff and “dream” sequences

I'm 100% sure this is a metaphor for Anya's....ya know. Middle of the night, vulnerable person, no locks, lying on the bed on her back, force....feeding...that. Going from sleep stasis to sudden waking, barely registering the pain. Every single time Anya meets Jimmy she covers her mouth or turns away. The name of the game, combining mouthwash with cleaning up the ugly truth. Whitewashing, Sportwashing, Mouthwashing you get it.

That slimeball.

It also makes sense now why Anya didn't try to make Curly overdose with her in the med bay when she had the chance. It probably gave her vivid memories know.

There needs to be another alternative ending where Curly actually listens to Anya and instead of reacting like he does in the canon setting he just fucking beats the shit out of Jimmy and Swansea joins in while Daisuke is cheering and Anya is feeling better that they beat his jobless ass and they lock him up until they finish their mission and he gets arrested when he's back on earth

I'm surprised a lot of people interpret this as Jimmy beating Curly. I always felt like it was Jimmy forcing the pills down Curly's throat and the banging sound is Curly viciously throwing himself around because of the pain/trying to get away from Jimmy's hold

people who think curly is banging the bed because hes struggling with the meds, keep in mind that curly is a burn victim. almost his whole body is wrapped up. the painkillers are for the pain he feels on his whole body. how would he have the strength to bang his head or arms repeatedly that hard? keep in mind, choking is silent, so hes definitely not choking on the meds and banging himself on the bed because hes choking. Jimmy is definitely beating him. You can hear curly start to sob afterwards.
