ANNOTATION: Officially, Sotheby's estimates the diamond, Eternal Pink, will sell for over $35 million in June. Still, experts at the auction house say they won't be surprised if it breaks the record set by another pink diamond, the Williamson Pink Star diamond, which sold for $57.7 million last year. Miners discovered the purplish-pink Eternal Pink diamond in 2019 at the Damtshaa Diamond Mine in Botswana. Even though diamonds can now be created in labs, naturally occurring diamonds still sell for millions of dollars.
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexander Eblen, Sotheby’s Jewelry New York:
“These stones are formed in some of the harshest environments imaginable in terms of heat and pressure and time to create them. Unlike natural stones, lab grown stones are grown very short period of time using modern technology, high pressure, high temperature. It mimics some of those aspects of the earth. But in terms of rarity, there is no comparison.”
