Just gotta follow up on the question I asked during the chat. I wasn't questioning the value of a shoulder check in general. But it's my understanding that the point of a shoulder check is to check one's blind spot, which is a little behind where the driver sits. In the case of making a left turn, there *shouldn't* be anyone entering one's blind spot on the left, since one is in the leftmost lane in the direction of travel (unless there are multiple lanes turning left). Therefore the obstacles that one needs to watch out for are all ahead of the vehicle. Of course, you never know if something unexpected is going to happen, and therefore to be extra safe a shoulder check is advisable, granted. But my question was intended to ask what sort of things one might expect to discover during the shoulder check. When changing lanes on the highway, the answer is obvious: another vehicle in the destination lane that one would collide with if one made the lane change just then. In my experience, that perhaps happens 2-3% of the times I make a shoulder check on the highway. I was just trying to find out if I had missed anything when thinking through the situation making a left turn at an intersection. I couldn't see that there was a possibility of anyone entering one's left blind spot in that case, *unless* they were doing something irregular, as in the example I cited.
