I've always wanted to have a mocking "Gender Reveal Party" where the two options are written on a board in gray and it will say: Will it be a _baby_ or a _baby?_ but then of course I reveal I'm not having a baby at all and dump out a burlap sack filled with snakes.

Broke: Gender Reveal Party
Woke: Genital Release Party

Edit: I propose the term 'genital release party' to be used either to make gender reveals sound even creepier, OR as a cheesy pick up line like in the video.

Let's just call it baby reveal party. Hide the baby till the party and boom here's the baby surprise

“A wife telling her husband, ‘That’s a girls drink”!! That one got me ❤️ Love that they highlight that it goes both ways.

The woman who held the first gender reveal party in 2008, Jenna Karvunidis, has spoken out against the trend for reinforcing traditional gender roles and perpetuating transphobia. She says she has listened and learned a lot about the hurt it causes, on top of the fact she never intended it to blow up like it did.

In fact, the daughter she was celebrating prefers to keep her hair short and wear suits (although according to my research she identifies as a girl and uses she/her pronouns).

Actually learned something, never had it so clearly explained the differences between gender and sex. And of course hilarious. Amazing as always Michael.

It took me a moment or two to understand what sex-reveal parties are. Maybe we have similar parties in the UK, but I find this sort of thing really very bizarre and distasteful.

I mainly just find it really, really weird to throw an entire party just to announce which genitals your baby has (or may have based on an ultrasound). We already know there is no guarantee that the sex assignment given based on the babies genitals will be correct for that child as they grow up, as they could be trans, but there is also no guarantee even the ultrasound itself will be accurate at all about the babies physical body! I’ve known so many people over the years who have thought 100% that they were having a boy (aka someone thought they spotted a baby penis on a fuzzy ultrasound) only to find out it wasn’t the case once the baby arrived.

Also, intersex kids are a thing, and this whole “is it a boy or a girl??” reveal thing makes it seem even more like intersex people don’t matter or even exist, although it’s not nearly as rare as previously thought to be. Not only is gender a spectrum, physical sex is a spectrum. & It’s not even some wild theory, it scientifically proven. Even the chromosomes of most people considered to be “biological females” or “biological males” are not always XX or XY throughout their entire body. “Bio male” and “bio female” are basically just our best attempts at sorting the wide variety of physical human variation into two distinct groups, that’s it.

Kind of a tangent, but I seriously don’t understand why we gender our kids and apply gender stereotypes to them. I think it comes from wanting your kids to share your values, ie maybe wanting your sons to be tough and your daughters to be independent, but these values themselves don’t have to be gendered. Why not raise your child to be strong, independent, and follow the morals you follow. And then as they grow up if they like dresses let them wear dresses and if they like football let them play football.

Don’t 👏 forget 👏 intersex 👏 folxs 👏
Sex is not as simple as male or female: XXY, XYY, XO, and more mean that sex (and genitals) are also on a spectrum, just like gender!
