'At this point, I think we can reassure Canadians that this is not a cyber attack,' said Parliamentary Secretary Greg Fergus of Rogers' Canada-wide outage, citing early analysis from the Communications Security Establishment, a Canadian spy agency that focuses on electronic surveillance.

This is exactly why the Shaw/Rogers merger should never be allowed to happen. We don"t need more monopoly - in fact, we need more telecom companies/competition in Canada.

This is why there needs to be more than 3-4 internet providers; if one goes down, there's still plenty of others

The problem with monopolies and centralized power on full display. Canada is in a perilous position

He didn't answer anything. Or he wasn't allowed to say what really happened.

This is unacceptable. When so many institutions are reliant on internet service from Rogers, "no ETA" is not good enough.

I want to know why our banks are connected to Rogers to begin with. This is why there needs to be more than 3 companies for internet, cable/satellite, phone services this is crazy.

A few years ago Verizon was planning on expanding into Canada. Rogers, Bell and Telus were in panic mode cause they don’t like competition.

“Cheaper than most telecommunications worldwide”?

Canada has one of the most expensive phone plans.

They should issue some kind of compensation when the service is back up and running without too many hurdles. If I'm late on a payment as a customer I'm penalized because of the contract. It's only fair.

I love how the government says it’s not a hack but Rogers doesn’t even know what happened!

Let me save you 13 mins, he does not know when the internet/ phone services will be restarted. Do not know the root cause. Do not know when it will be restored.

Has he tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?

"We cannot speculate"..."we don't understand" ... that's a cyber attack...

And this is why I can't understand why anyone would want or trust a cashless society. It's not likely to happen but when something goes wrong it's often catastrophic.

Whatever's going on here needs to be a reminder going into the future of what can happen when all of your eggs are only in a handful of baskets and genuinely taken into consideration before moving forward.

Rogers still does not know the root cause of the problem. How can the Federal Government say that this is not likely a cyber attack?

Broken again. Only 15 months and it is down again.
Telus hasn't gone down for years.

So when they say it was “likely not” it means it “most definitely was”

Buddy there is tons of profit not providing a good competitive service and charging over the top for it. That's exactly what got us here. Greed, negligence, nepotism and incompetence.
