My outlook on happiness has been completely different, demonstrating that happiness can be caused by different things for different people. Saying to give up on one's selfish nature as a way to increase happiness is more of a "feel good about yourself" response. Being more selfish instead of worrying about others all the time has made me more happy in my life.

I want to give my current theories about happiness below:
Deep sources of happiness (lasting happiness) - One or many may apply, others may exist for unique individuals
1. The act of learning something new, and improving in things you know
2. The act of leaving something precious behind (kids anyone?)
3. The act of knowing and accepting oneself (just think about who you are for a bit)
4. Physical pleasures (massages, late-night adventures, ect)
5. Overcoming obstacles or problems in life
6. Being a good spot within your relationships - you belong/having no deep ties - your free (depending on the individual)

Shallow sources of happiness (lasts a few minutes up to a day):
1. Entertainment (movies, plays, games, ect)
2. Performing an act one enjoys (but not learning anything from it)
3. Helping others (As someone who usually takes no pleasure from helping others, I cannot bear to move this any higher because people are good at saying what sounds good, even if it isn't true)

True happiness comes from developing the habit of keeping the mind and senses focused on the true "Self" and not allowing their natural outgoing tendencies to manifest. There is no true happiness in the world of duality that is governed by constant change. In duality one can only hope for a temporary feeling of happiness that is experienced at the time when the mind withdraws itself from the external world by the fulfillment of some desire and there for a brief moment it has a chance of not going outward- desiring and then experiencing it's true nature that is happiness.
