My uncle became an addict years ago. He ended up on the street due to that. Even though my dad offer to help him get off the streets, he just didn't wanted to leave that life. He meet another homeless woman, with the same problems as him. She ended up pregnant while living on the street. When the baby was born, off course child services took custody of the baby. They said that a qualify family member could get hold of the baby if they wanted. My uncle ended up calling my dad. One week later, the baby was in our house, the very same day of my birthday. The baby girl tested positive for drugs. She would cry endlessly, and she would shake like I never seen a baby be so restless. She also had breathing problems.

My parents took really good care of her. They ended up adopting her because neither my uncle or his girlfriend fought to keep her. Her mother (or should I say "incubator") only saw her like 4 times before she vanished. My little sister grew up healthy with no problems. She is 6 now, and now we are starting to noticed that she is becoming extremely hyperactive. She is also over emotional. She is only 6 years old, and she has already overcome so many things, including losing our dad in 2020 due to covid 😥 They had such a wonderful bond. My dad said she press his finger and looked at him, the first time he went to see her at the hospital. He loved her and gave her all the love she needed. It didn't make me feel jealous at all, and after all I finally got the sister I always wanted.

She still has our mom, our brother, and me to care for her. We will never stop caring for her, ever.

For anyone interested, many hospitals take volunteers for baby holding in cases like these, so if you’re someone that likes holding babies and wants to help, check any local hospitals near you to see what you can do.

I was addicted to drugs while I was a baby (cuz of my biological parents) and got placed into a great foster family.
I saw this episode while I was pregnant with my daughter, and I started cried so bad. God it was so hard to watch, but it’s a reality for a lot of babies

I worked with a mom who was addicted. She said she was too high to realize she was pregnant until she gave birth. The baby was born addicted to all sorts of drugs and had a rough start to life…

To know that this actually happens in reality is both heartbreaking and horrific. The terrors our children go through.. I wish there was enough power to protect all the little ones in this universe from harm and pain....

I work in a hospital. The baby that they show crying in the show looks extraordinarily healthy and normal compared to what these babies actually look like unfortunately😕. In reality these babies are typically very skinny, Often premature, and vibrate with withdrawal tremors. I’m not talking a little bit of shaking, I’m talking a vibration that looks unnatural. They scream inconsolably. Not a normal baby cry, an anguish to scream and they don’t sleep. They need one on one care from an army of doctors and nurses.

I was born addicted to heroin and cocaine! Kept in intensive care for babies born addicted, placed on high dose of morphine to combat withdrawls for 12 weeks, until I was weened off the drugs and morphine. Then went to live with my mums adoptive mum;my Grammy! She took my mum to court for custody and like a good mother giving me my best chance ; my mum never showed up to court.
My Grammy visited me every day while I was going through withdrawls and treatment. Skin to skin contact and a calm environment is LIFE& MY GRAMMY would bathe me in nice water and taped a cassette player to my crib at the hospital and play healing music for me and the other babies which would sooth us.
To this day, water, a calm environment and healing music brings me the most comfort. Also being wrapped in a cozy soft blanket. Some things never change lol

I loved the fact that the mom's first reaction was "my bag?" in absolute anguish. I love how these medical shows (and New Amsterdam in particular) show how life can be just complicated but that doesn't make you a "monster"

I've never had body chills like the ones I had when she found the baby.

Taken from the headlines, the real nurse adopted the baby. And she made rehabbing addicted born her life's calling. Now nearly every major city hospital has a ward with a nurse and volunteers like this. Too bad we just couldn't get rid of the opioids all together. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 For every addict may GOD find them on their journey of life and heal them.

My heart mended as soon as it broke when I saw the courage and kindness of these nurses. God bless them. They really do have healing hands. THIS is why donations and supporting the medical system matters.

I’m 4 years sober, but I tried for a long time before that, so I know what withdrawals are, and how they feel. The worst pain, I remember thinking my legs hurt so bad one time, if someone came in and wanted to chop off my legs I would have 110% let them.. I would lay in the same position for days in sweat and then chills and pain over and over and over and over. But to think about babies having to go through this, I could NEVER. I’ve seen videos of babies addicted, and I remember thinking I want to help these babies, I NEED to help these babies. They come into the world and just go in to unbelievable amount of pain is just too much for me to bare.

Addiction is such a terrible and cruel thing. If I had 3 wishes, eradicating addiction would be one.

I saw a video of a real life old man who was the NICU grandpa at this hospital. He came and held the babies and sang to them. He did this every day. It brought tears to my eyes. It’s very sad to see a tiny little being suffer his way. Heartbreaking reality of addiction

I’m a recovering addict been clean 2years. I’ve been through withdrawals and it was so bad at one point it broke me. I don’t wish those symptoms on anyone and just breaks my heart to know babies suffer like that because the mother can’t will herself or love be baby enough to get into treatment. Getting pregnant as an addict you can be put on meds to keep you from using and won’t hurt the pregnancy.

I’m glad more media is portraying this situation. That was me when I was born. I was abandoned and had crack in my system
