During the Siege of Alesia, when the cruel realities of siege and starvation began to take their toll on Vercingetorix’s Gallic defenders, to stretch provisions they decided to expel their women, children, and invalids from the fortress with a plea that Caesar let them through the lines. Caesar ruthlessly refused, and the Gallic civilians were left to miserably starve in the no-man’s land between the fortress and the Roman works.

The Romans encircled the city and built fortifications. When the Gauls ran out of food, they sent the women and children out of the city into the hands of the Romans. The Romans refused to take them as slaves or let them out, and the Gauls refused to let them back into the city, so they all slowly died in the death strip between the city walls and the Roman fortifications. The men of Gaul had no choice but to watch their families slowly die on the ground they called home. It's a gut-wrenching story.
