must know about the scope of Stalin's repression. there were 1344408 (0, 7% of total population) prisoned in the USSR in 1940 (the midst of the Great Terror and the year of "occupation" of Baltic republics, Western Ukrain, Moldovia and Belorus). 2198873 (0, 69% of total population) person were contained in the prisons of the USA in 2016 ( without offshore and secret prisons outside the US)

What a horrible history. "Sent to Siberia" was used as a joke line in certain movies and sitcoms when I was growing up in the USA. I now know it was no joke. I plan to learn as much as I can about this period in history. There are youth led political factions here in the U.S. that need to have their illusions shattered by way of much needed historical context for their ideological platforms.
