Basel town hall rathaus showing its painted outside wall, cupola and symbol of the city.
The red-brick old townhall of Basel is a spectacular building that dates back to the 16th century. Another townhall of Basel was destroyed in an earthquake in 1356; it was then replaced by the old townhall as we now it now between 1501-1514, shortly after Basel joined the Swiss Confederacy. In the inner courtyard, colourful paintings with scenes from the Bible and Swiss history can be found. Under the clocktower, on the multi-coloured tile roof, a statue of a Swiss pikemen is testimony to the warlike history of Switzerland in the Middle Ages.
