I can remember vividly watching this in college with my gf and her parents in Waikiki Theatre in Honolulu, Oahu. Wow, 36 years ago, boy that went fast.

Happy birthday to the absolute legend. He's the only actor that is still pulling crowds to the cinema even on the 6th weekend.

This scene is a replay of my life as a teenager. I was a senior in high school getting ready to graduate in June of 65.
Played sports, had a girlfriend and totally directionless regarding my future. Thought about college but my parents didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Did a couple of college tours but was overwhelmed by the facilities and the students. I felt kids like me from my background had no place in college. I was so insecure and shy. I still remember my friends getting their college acceptance letters andshowing them to their friends with such excitement.
I came realize that I had to get out of town.
I had my buddy drive me down to the Marine recruiter’s office. Signed up for a four year hitch. Didn’t tell my parent’s or my girlfriend. A week later I left for Parris Island for boot camp.
First day at PI I realized I had made the biggest mistake of my life.
While all my friends were either going to college or starting their careers I was a US Marine. Travelled the world and did a 13 month tour in Vietnam as a Scout Dog Handler in the 1st. MarDiv. Brutal 13 months. Came thru it with a Bronze Star w/V, and two Purple Hearts and the rank of Sergeant. Discharged in June of 69. Came back home with little money, and no real career.
Somehow I got accepted to a state university. Those four years away and much more confidence allowed me to excel in school. Double majored, graduated at the top of my class and went into the corporate world. Achieved more success than I could ever imagine. I am blessed.
Every time I view this scene it reminds of how insecure I was and how one rash decision can alter your life.

This particular scene just shows how Oliver Stone is a genius. He portrayed, perfectly, the innocence of younghood and the subsequent lost of it by war and politics.

Best Tom Cruise Performance in my opinion.

It's a beautiful yet heartbreaking kiss scene. How tragic it is that a young man carries such a first love in his heart as he heads to the battlefield... The music is also so beautiful.

Such an amazing talent. Cruise's acting range is so versatile. Born on the 4th of July is a perfect example of it. He went from an high school jock, loving his country, God fearing, awkward around the girls teenager to becoming an angry, shaking his fist at the system drunk and cussing out his own mother before it was all over with!!

I just watched this movie on some 80's channel. My god Tom Cruise was stunning when he was young. He's still beautiful but when he's asking her to the I could so feel his pain.

Oh my God. I am so glad that my curiosity brought me to watch this segment of the movie.
The brutal honesty of the catastrophe that the Vietnam wrought on our young men is so perfectly shown. I feel the anguish of Ron Kevin as he struggles with his feelings -- denying them in th name of a patriotic duty. So beautifully told here. Tom does a fantastic job and bringing in the music from "Moon River" from the dramatic ending of the movie is brilliant.

I saw this when I was 17… I think in January 1990 or December 1989… I was a senior in high school. I got stoned as shit, so I was really plugged into the movie emotionally. this scene here where he goes to the dance and then transitions right into the war, is one of the best directing and editing transition scenes I’ve ever seen Oliver Stone produce.. he goes from innocence, right into the brutality of war… I was so high when I saw this movie, it just made such an impression on me because I was of that age when war came calling my generation, and of course we would be going to war in eight months after this movie came out… Iraq in August 1990. A lot of my friends went and join the Marines.
