"On fears of trade war" is blaming the trade war concerns for a lot that it didn't cause.
The tax cut earlier this year, added $1.5T on top of the structural deficit. This means that the government has to borrow extra each year to cover it. This drives up the money supply and creates a risk of inflation. Interest rates have to go up to prevent inflation. Higher interest rates are bad for growth.
Late in 2016, the labor market started to tighten. This is good for workers because it created some upwards pressure on wages. Some businesses, however, started having a hard time hiring more staff to expand. There was also an inflation risk here too so the interest rates went up a bit extra for it.

Do not forget that China has a competitive advantage over the USA based on its efficiency. As a result, their goods are cheaper for the American consumer who either pays more for an equivalent American produced good or does not have the choice of an American produced good because it is not produced due to cost inefficiencies. The bottom line is, China is selling more to America than it buys from them because American consumers are demanding more Chinese goods...there is a willing buyer willing seller relationship! The question you Americans should be asking is why Chinese goods are in so much demand by US consumers...the answer is" "value for money" which your local businesses cannot provide...therein lies your problem. All that tariffs accomplish is force the local citizen into buying goods at a higher cost which helps to sustain inefficient local industries...the entire country suffers as a result...economics 101...this is what you Americans have been teaching us in your economics textbooks for years...why not practice it???...It is clear that your policies are not based on rational economic theory, it is based on ideology...the last "country" that went down that route was the USSR...where are they now?
