The German Empire mobilized on August 1, 1914. This triggered the call up of many Landsturm units. As the war continued, as early as 1915, many conscripts joined front-line troops as replacement personnel. After the war, Article 173 of the Treaty of Versailles (1919) abolished compulsory military service and with it the Landsturm. #historytiktok #WWI #WW1 #DYK #Landsturm

The Democratic Banner., Sept 24, 1915 In the accompanying Illustration are shown members of the German landsturm on their way to the eastern front of war...The German landsturm is composed of the older men in Germany who long ago served their time in the army. These men are now used mainly to garrison cities and forts in Russia and Poland which have capitulated to the advancing Germans. As a veteran who has been out for almost 12 years now, I understand why these men would want to serve again in a time of need.
