AJ Lester and Vern Putzer travel to Quebec to do some mountain riding with Jonathan Lefebvre and Aventure Chic-Chocs. To say they had a blast is an understatement! Polaris PRO-RMKs and Timbersleds included.

Then in Trail Tech, AJ installs some accessories from Woody's to help increase overall traction and performance for his sled.

And in Test Ride, Luke takes out the Ski-Doo MKZ X 850.

I enjoy watching you guys' videos, it's clear you have a passion for the ride. I understand that the majority of revenue for the manufacturers is in the lightest most powerful high markers and the cushiest trail rides, but that understanding doesn't keep me from dying a little inside when there is never a utility minded machine mentioned outside of "we had the camera guys get off the utility sleds and ride the toys today!"

Though I live in Fairbanks Alaska now, my riding roots are in Rural Alaska on simple, carburated, fan cooled utility snow machines like the old Tundra, Elan, Enticer II, and Bravo. Yes, I said snowmachine. Back home we called them snogos, and the sled was what we towed the groceries in. Those machines are boring and uncomfortable by today's standards, but they were built for village mechanics and could be jerry rigged to get home almost no matter what. Almost.

Today I trap on a 2009 Yamaha VK Pro. I'm not happy with it any more. The engine has been great, loads and loads of power, it'll throw your head right back...when it starts. I've gone trapping at 40 below Fahrenheit when I was using a Polaris Supertrak with the 488 fan cooled two stroke. My cutoff used to be -25F, though I violated it on occasion. It's evolved to "if the Viking will start." Sometimes it'll start at -30, sometimes it won't start at -20. If it starts on the trailer at home I go. The plastics are fragile and prone to break if you back over an obstacle buried in the snow. The radiator blows warm air under thee seat causing me to have a wet ass if it's warmer than 10F. The exposed rear exiting exhaust melts all the snow the track throws up there glaciating the entire skid. And the integral bearings in the bogie wheels! You can't service most of the damn things, have to buy an entirely new assembly! On the old machines you could take the bearing out, pop the seal, jam more grease in there if it was still good and get another season out of them. But when that VK starts it's a strong comfy ride if it's cold enough to keep my butt dry.

I was very happy to see Yamaha bring the VK540 back to the North American market. If I was made of money I'd buy and try all of them, but I have to use what I've got for now. I tell you though, that smooth bottomed tub, roomy engine compartment, easily accessed spark plugs, big under seat storage, and bogies with circlips holding the bearings in looked pretty good to this village mechanic. It was reminiscent of the old Tundra I managed to get my hands on recently, but with a much more comfortable riding position!

Be safe out there!

I have an 850 x with an inch and a quarter rip saw with 160 hornet studs that are 1.45.. giving u a full half inch bite over the lug.. 90 1.325 studs doesn't do a good job on an 800 let alone an 850. I like that thing to wheelie out of the corner and be able to stop on a dime..
