In this episode, I introduce the fourth 'sin' of leadership research: the lack of problematization. Building on previously discussed sins—conflating behavior with perception, circular reasoning, and mislabeling leadership—this video critiques the superficial nature of much of the existing leadership literature. I introduce the definition of problematization, emphasizing the need to challenge and interrogate the fundamental assumptions of current theories rather than simply identifying gaps. Through examples in sensemaking, organizational culture, and ethical leadership, I illustrate how problematization can lead to more nuanced and applicable theories. Additionally, I discuss how problematization can lead to groundbreaking questions and insights that enhance the rigor and impact of leadership research.
