Replacing My MacBook Pro's Fan

Thought it would be worth filming this; maybe it'll help someone who's trying to do the same thing in the future.

Was helpful to see how that ribbon cable connector operates. Thanks for that. Here's a fun story: My fan was making a rattling sound like little mice inside. I got the cover off of my fan and blew it out nice and good with canned air to no avail. Connected it back and still had the same rattle. Finally I decided to just temporarily disconnect it until I could get a new one installed. I got the cable off and holding up the fan with the cover off decided to give it one more go with the canned air - deep in between the housing and the back of the blades. It worked. After reconnecting the cable the fan spun up and no rattle. Fun times!

Just watched your video as my MacBook has exactly the same problem and sound! You are far more confident than me in fixing it but your video has enabled me to confirm diagnosis and I can find a local company to assist. Much as I love Apple products, my 13” MacBook Pro is only 3 years old and the fan is failing and my beloved MacBook Air was 6 years old when there was an RAM failure which could not be fixed as integral to the Motherboard and no spare parts available! Thank you for such a clear and informative video - now following!

The black rubber pad on the fan connector is protection, under it there is a small circuit board so the fan can speak with the logic board for fan speed etc. The fan that you put in is taken from a more recent MacBook, on the earlier models the fan was black, and on the later ones they are silver :-)

About to upgrade my RAM and the fan, so thank you for this video! I've previously upgraded my hard drive to a SSD, best thing I've done, so I'm continuing the upgrades, sooo much cheaper than getting a new laptop or paying someone else to upgrade it for me. The fan was 10 euro on amazon.

thanks for your enlightenment Jake, I think I'm going to follow your tutorial. I have the exact issues on my 2013 MacBook Pro, the left fan is somehow making noise the same as yours. The (left) fan only cost around 17 pounds in Indonesia :)

Workers at the nearby airport are already complaining that my 2011 MBP fan is too loud for them to concrentrate when I'm turning my machine on.
I wasn't sure if a replacement would be any more quiet, but that helps the decision making.
