Dude, I picked up advice from another video that didn't work, but your instructions nailed the problem. Thanks much.

use optimized media means that when you render it will render from your proxy files and not your original full res media

Thanks very much Edim. It worked for me. My heart sank after a weeks intense work to find the render was failing. Tomorrow's deadline saved by this fix. Thanks again for posting.

Thank you! I've watched at least 5 other YouTube tutorials on this which were all giving the work arounds that you stated at the beginning. Yours is the only one that worked and sounded like a legit means to rectify the issue.

Beautiful, worked for me, too!
The option "Use optimised media" tells the software to utilise previously generated optimised media instead of the original video file, which of course only applies to clips for which you have previously generated optimised media. "Generate optimised media" is a menu command you can apply to any clip in order to create a converted, more "editing-friendly" version of the clip. This is particularly useful for clips using strongly compressed codecs such as h264 or h265 as these need to be uncompressed in real-time, taking up a lot of computing power, sometimes leading to choppy playback (if the machine can't keep up). It is my understanding that the "optimised media" files generated utilise a codec that is uncompressed (or barely compressed), thus requiring less computational resources and playing back more smoothly (with the trade-off being that they require more storage). Using these pre-converted clips during rendering introduces a slight risk of broken optimised media files to be used rather than working straight from the original, but eliminates the clip conversion step as another source for errors, I suppose.

This usually works, but if it is not working, see if you have some fusion or compound clips in the start because they can slow or stop your video from rendering. Those titles which have 3D elements and lights may be also the cause for failing to render. Consider removing them or try to render I/O so that they are excluded from the render so you know if they were the cause.

You can also decrease the quality by restricting bitrate or not using the maximum render speed on the file tab.
