No, you’re not covered for an alien attack on your home.

But let’s talk about Home Insurance Coverage A, also known as Dwelling Coverage.

Dwelling coverage protects the physical structure of your home — and many things attached to it — if they are damaged or destroyed by a covered peril.

This coverage extends to things like your attached garage, porch, windows, doors, roof, chimney, fireplace, carpets, floors and, well, you get the picture.

Antennas, satellite dishes and fences are typically not covered by the dwelling portion of your home insurance policy, even if they are connected to your home.

Since dwelling coverage applies to the physical structure and many structures that are connected to your home, Coverage A only applies to homeowners and condo insurance, so renters need not apply.

Each policy has a maximum, which should be sufficient to repair or rebuild your entire home if it were completely destroyed by a covered peril. So if your home is worth $500,000 (kudos to you), but you should also have $500,000 worth of dwelling coverage to be on the safe side.
