Yuri Knorozov was soviet linguist who cracked the code of the Mayan hieroglyphic writing system and he always credited his cat, Asya as the coauthor of all his work; but his editors would always remove her which enraged him.

I like to imagine this man was smiling constantly. Up until his cat was removed from his credit.

Just by looking at him, you could tell just how fed up he was with editors constantly cropping his pet cat out.

"Smile for the photo, Yuri."
"We are."

I find it interesting that both him and his cat share the same icy blue cold stare

It’s even funnier that he loves his cat so much because of how grumpy he looks lol
I’m glad that someone obeyed his wishes

An academic *willingly* sharing credit. With a cat no less. What a legend.

To those who want to know what he meant and how he cracked the code:

After some searches, he meant that the signals (expressions, sounds, signs etc..) are emitted by the sender with the intention of conveying a message.
When someone communicates, they promise that the information they provide is useful.
On the other side of the communication is the recipient, who interpretes and decodes the signals and promises sent by the sender.
In this case the cat is the sender, the kitten the recipient who learns and is informed by the signals and promises sent by their parent.

Yuri was like “WAIT YOU ARE A GENIUS”, because instead of just cracking the code from a sender where you are NOT their recipient, he goes to study it from people who ARE the recipients; The surviving speakers of the dialects of the extinct language in the Americas.

The language was passed down from generation to generation. With this advantage he managed to reconstruct the grammar and vocabulary and decipher the Mayan writing system.

ofcourse theres alot more behind the story but i summarised it as best as i can.

My man is staring at the camera like he's going to psychically snap my neck if i don't put his cat in the credits.

Whoever those editors where, they did not pass the vibe check.

Essentially his eureka moment was that he, a Soviet likely was not going to understand the Mayans because he was not the recipient of these Mayan texts. So he studies from the native people in those regions, while they obviously don’t understand Mayan learning the dialects, speaking patterns and grammar of these languages helped better understand how the Mayans would talk. The cat helped him realize this because the cats communication made sense to the kitten because the cat communication was intended to make sense to the recipient, the kitten, but the human will struggle understanding because we aren’t the recipient

He looks so serious, he has that look on his face that's kinda a warning like " you better keep my cat in this photo "

It's rare to see a cat and their human share the same expression.
