Step 1: use a degreaser on the exterior. Prevents undesirable paint reactions and improves paint adhesion.
Step 2: after making sure the surface is clean and dust free, spray with an adhesion promoter first, then let dry.
You need 2 things for paint to stick, a chemical bond, and a mechanical bond(sand scratches). Since no surface abrasion is part of this process, I highly recommend using an adhesion promoter, Dupont 222s is an example. There are more available by different companies.

I did this exact thing on my AR, but for the pattern I used an old fishing net to give me the hex like pattern. It’s been 3 years and still looks great

Just make sure you actually remove and paint your slide separately. So you don't get a big ass unpainted spot underneath

Tip put tape over your serial number before you paint it. If the serial number is unreadable because of paint you can catch a charge. Fps Russia was almost charged with that.

I just wrapped mine in outdoor fabric. Works and absolute treat and it's washable.
