Some of the best algae-eating pond fish, You probably came across our video by searching for algae-eating pond fish. well in today's video I will talk about a few fish that will eat algae in your garden pond.

Hardy - algae-eaters you don’t need to take inside for the winter

Pond Loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) - dojo or weather loach
40 to 77°F, and are well-suited for beginner
foot in length happy with docile fish

Koi and Goldfish - omnivores and will indeed feed on algae to some extent, more so in the winter months, do rely on them goldfish and koi really do prefer other types of food

Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) - Originating from Asia- different teeth, eaters of potentially problematic aquatic vegetation, won’t typically consume filamentous algae

Are Pond Fish Enough to Control All Algae?

As a rule NO - grow faster than fish can actively consume it, graze down algae during the cooler months

The only realistic way to control it would be through more traditional methods:
UV clarifiers, pond vacuums, barley straw, and even natural algae deterrents, such as pond plants.

* UV Clarifiers (Green Algae)
* Pond Vacuums (String Algae)
* Barley Straw (All Algae – Long term)
* Pond Plants (All Algae – Long term)
* Water Quality Tests (Slowing Algae Growth)
* Good Quality Fish Food (Less Waste)

Tropical - algae-eaters 10oC or 55-75°F

Pleco’s plecostomus - over 12” long, from South America,

Chinese High-Fin Banded Shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) - slow growers but 4 feet, only really suitable for very large (and deep) pond designs,

Siamese Algae Eater - 4 - 6”, most popular as they are energetic (with the character) and adept algae consumers, all types of algae, however, can stress out any calmer fish social species and need much Warm pond water approximately 70 and 79°F

With your hand moving like that, the fish thought you were going to feed them. Very funny! Good video
Thanks

Fascinating! I had no idea koi eat algae, in the winter I thought they just kind of shut down and in the summer it’s what I feed them that keeps them alive. Brilliant video although I’ve never heard of the shark you mentioned or the other fish. I’ve noticed a new style to your videos too, I like it. Thanks Mark keep them coming

Brilliant video. I've got three huge weather loaches and an albino grass carp in with my kois, shubs, oranda and black moor. Short algae on the sides and bottom of the pond is all I get. No issues anymore but still found your video interesting!

I had little knowledge fish ate the algae. Good to know so when I’m away on holiday I don’t have to worry too much that the fish are starving. As always a video full of information thanks

Will they survive in huge natural beaver pond without fountain to bring oxygen in? I'm looking for some fishes to clean lilies and other plantation. They grow all over covering the pond in the summer month

Hi, please can you help? I filled a new pond with rain water and planted lilies in baskets of pond soil off Amazon. The water has turned brown. The filter isn’t removing the brown colour. Will this hurt the goldfish I want to put in? How can I clear the water? Thanks

I’ve got a 125 gallon pond with 3 goldfish so I’m considering getting a Pond Loach to help keep the algae down.

Good day sir. Im planning to build a small pond around 500 gallons with maybe 65watts pump. What fish can you recommend? And max number of fish that i can put in order not to get the pond dirty so fast

If I were to introduce a weather loach to my pond, then I’d have to put them indoors during the winter? I only have four gold fish in a 1250 litre pond outdoors U.K.

Hi Mark, what about string algae and pH Swings. Best live food for koi? Can u do vid on medications? My nephew turned off pump for 2 days. Now the koi are sick. Big one has carp pox. Lost 3 also. Some not eating. I guess stress caused it. I do constant water changes with trickle system. Lots of marginals and big biofiltration. 6000 litre pond. Use pp but how often? Koi flashing still - anchor worm?

I rarely feed my koi and yet they are fat. I can’t get rid of the algae so I’m sure the fish don’t mind. I try to feed them food I buy at the store and they barely go for it.

My pond has no flow, but it’s very large, I need some fish who will be able to survive in stagnant water and also under the ice in winter, which fish is best? Thx
