In an interview to discuss the election results the economist, author and political commentator, Parakala Prabhakar, who is also Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s husband, has said the results are “a very clear and a very tight slap on the face of the Prime Minister and his Party and his way of doing things.” Describing Narendra Modi as “a baahubali kind of person”, Dr. Parakala said: “The people of India have said very clearly they did not like what Narendra Modi was doing, his agenda and the way he ran the government and conducted the campaign.”



In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Dr. Parakala said he is not at all sure how long the new Narendra Modi government will last. To begin with, he questioned whether it will even be formed and then, if it is, he questioned whether it will survive a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha. If it does he said there is a very high possibility that in the next few months the Prime Minister may be changed, either under pressure from his own Party or the RSS or NDA allies. And there is even the possibility that Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar could walk out.



Dr. Parakala Prabhakar said the challenge facing the Prime Minister is a simple but monumental one: “Can old Mr. Modi become new Mr. Modi?” When asked if this is possible, Dr. Parakala, in turn, asked a question, have you ever heard of a wolf in sheep’s clothing actually imagining himself to be a sheep? Dr. Parakala said Mr. Modi has always been a wolf in wolf’s clothing. This analogy was his way of explaining that he does not believe Mr. Modi is capable of a comprehensive makeover of his style of political functioning, character and personality.



I will stop there because I think it’s important you should see this interview for yourself. Beyond giving you the main headlines, I do not want to run the risk of wrongly paraphrasing or précising Dr. Parakala. He has been extremely courageous and outspoken and has said a lot and it’s only fair and proper that you should be allowed to hear him yourself. I assure you that every moment of this 30-minute interview is worth hearing. Few people understand the top leaders of the BJP better than Dr. Parakala and fewer have spoken so candidly about how they see the future of the new government that could be in the making.



Finally, Dr. Parakala was perhaps the first analyst to predict that Narendra Modi would lead his Party to its worst election results in 10 years and lose its Lok Sabha majority.
