Existentialism: An Introduction, Part 1 - Misconceptions

This video is the first of a three-part series that provides an introduction to existentialism. More specifically, this video explores people's common perceptions of existentialism, especially with respect to the extent to which those perceptions are accurate, and the extent to which they're not. Here's a link to the video that I mention at the end of this one:

6:42 onwards. It took me one hell of a long time to realise that my life wouldn't improve unless I accepted more of the subjective aspects into it. I'm just starting to, and my god I feel truly human for the first time in ages. It feels good to just feel SOMETHING as opposed to always trying to objectively tackle feelings like they're on a shelf and you can pick them up and swap them around. Thanks Prof!

I liked the conclusions you draw here . Social norm's have an dampening effect on the free flow of truly honest conversation. Looking forward to more great videos!

You're right about "happy" people. There are LCSWs (social workers) who lead groups of depressed people by demanding that they work on their happy thoughts and "things to be grateful for". It seems to never occur to such people that someone has to confront an existential sad fact of life and learn to accept it. No, no, you've got to run away from your troubles. "Keep your head busy". Play happy music. Talk to happy people. Avoid the news with all those troubling developments.Watch comedies on TV, not dramas and certainly not tragedies.

Another wonderful and insightful video from my favorite YouTuber! You could have cleaned your office before filming this! Don’t make me come up there!

Thank you for the video! I am writing my BA dissertation on Kierkegaard's philosophy as seen through Ingmar Bergman's cinematography and this video helped shed some light on the topic of existentialism, will definitely watch the following videos.

Sir, how about a series of video on Positive Psychology. Whether you espouse it or not, you can make it intelligible to the general audience and hopefully explain your personal take on it.

Just watched the 12 minute Nietzsche programme (Nietzsche in Twelve Minutes) and found it very good. This series on Existentialism also seems really interesting. Wondering whether Colin Wilson gets a mention at some point, for, as far as I’m aware, he saw himself as an optimistic existentialist, viewing both the philosophies of Sartre and Camus as versions of pessimistic existentialism.

Can the theatre of the absurd, really net the kind of change augured by Sartre? It's certainly exciting, but that only makes me less faithful.

"Personal predilection?" Those words, put together along with thinking about the "P's", in an overly "Sesame Street" type of linguistic analysis, gives me a conclusion that its sum is far more valuable than its individual parts. Take that "Count Chocolate", or whatever that guys' name is that looks and sounds like Victor Borges!!

I've viewed the world as an existentialist for the last couple of years and frankly, I take a strange sense of glee at knowing that everything is bullshit.

Is there any real objective truth or is everything just subjective?
