Hi. My name is Dr. Joe Miller and in this series of the 10 minute teacher I want to help you discern key facets for contemporary Apologetics and develop a solid foundation for a Christian Worldview in our post-modern age. In this episode, I will give an introduction and summary of Rationalism.

In my mind, I can CONCEIVE of a man who is faster than a speeding bullet, and more powerful than a locomotive....therefore it logically follows that such a man MUST EXIST. HAHA

Very well-explained, Dr. Miller. I'm still realizing the difference, and what a bias there is in academe toward empiricism.

I've been reading Jorge Luis Borges today and I came upon a quote that I thought outlined my philosophical positioning fairly well. Let's see if you can discern my perspective from what I have written about what Jorge Luis Borges originally said.
Ficciones (1944)
Jorge Luis Borges wrote, in 1944;
‘’The truth is that we live out our lives putting off all that can be put off; perhaps we all know deep down that we are immortal and that sooner or later all men will do and know all things.’’
"Funes the Memorious" ["Funes El Memorioso"] (1944); also published in Labyrinths (1964)

This quote is a mixed bag... the first part is a simple yet succinct statement about how humankind lives its sorry existence…’’The truth is that we live out our lives putting off all that can be put off.’’
A popular perspective viewpoint…

Then Borges says; ‘’Perhaps we all know deep down that we are immortal.’’
There is no perhaps about it... the word ‘’perhaps’’ is used, in some form, by all ‘’religious, governmental, and commercial organizational entities’’ to engender doubt, the great disincentivizer of individual thinking and action, yet we all know deep down that our lifeforce is immortal but that this corporal form that it occupies is not... We only have this one life, in this body, that we ‘’know’’ is ours to live…

And Borges follows that last quote with its continuation; ‘’And that sooner or later all men will do and know all things.’’
Borges does not at all understand that all men and women are capable of doing all things and knowing all things already, and always have, but due to endarkening influences during his or her youthful and formative years, he or she has chosen to carapace that capability into an ivory-coated prison, as a mechanism to keep the emotional anguish under some semblance of personal control...and as a consequence, he or she has seemingly lost the ability to access great portions of their genius capable intelligence, which has an additional consequence of the creation of doubt, which then leads to further intelligence level and brain function depression and actual feelings of unhappiness and/or anger.

I know this is off-topic for you but how can Rationalism be used to investgate "The Mandela Effect?" I think many people are buying into the mandela effect because they think they remember history happening in a certain way; that's their a priori, but then they draw false conclusions from that about alternate dimensions etc. I would like to say there is a more "rational" explanation, such as the way we percieve events differently than they actually happened combined with confirmation bias, Gestal Psychology, and group think. Please comment, thank you.

The preeminent goal of philosophy should be that of encompassing a maximum of epistemological concepts through logical deduction with a minimum of hypotheses or axioms. That is, to take all of the philosophical isms out there and create the understanding of them all by the usage of one hypothesis or axiom, don’t you think?

(Before anything else, I'd like to say that I might be wrong, and any corrections would be appreciated)I'd have to disagree that logical consistency does not prove truth. Truth is relative. although form Plato's theory of forms (one of the building principles of modern rationalism), is part of one perfect concept. Take for instance somebody believes it's logical to kill and steal for survival; it's his truth. Then again, one may ask how, if there;s just one concept of truth, there can be relative forms of it? This is simply as a result of misinterpretation (in my view). The question should now be, who has misinterpreted what truth should be, the killer or the one who deems his actions wrong?

Saying that "rationalism" is the use of "reason" is a circular definition--all it does is define "reason" as that which rationalists do. Rationalists do not use scientific methodology to arrive at the most-probable answer, which is what most people would think "reason" meant. They don't use probability measures or information theory.

If something is possible, it does not mean it is real. There is no evidence at all for the existence of a God (or Gods), therefore it is just a possibility. Having faith in it doesn't make it real.

If rationalism is so valuable, a longer sentence would always be more important than a shorter one. That's clearly not the case. It's no surprise that people with higher IQs dont always have point accolades that are more notable. There are plenty of 120 IQers who have won noble prizes, and plenty of 150 IQers who have contributed ditto.

Rationalism is based on the aprioric knowledge which exists in everybody in born (ideas inantie). This knowledge consists of categories such as space, time, quality, quantity, motion, inertness that form our reason. All of our synthetic knowledge is constructed on these categories. In a sense, we can maximize this fact as none of our knowledge can exist beyond the space and time. Descartes who was a Jesusvite priest formulated this fact in his maxim ``Je pense donc Je suis`` (I think therefore I exist). Rationalism excludes the extra sensory perceptions as the source of our knowledge since they they exist in animals as well beyond any reason and apriorizes the intelligence in his epistemology. It does not contradict the Christianity in a sense that it accepts inspiration as the source of knowledge as formulated by Descartes in his work ``Chercher la vérité sous la lumiere de la nature (Searching for reality under the light of nature).

I’m looking for a definition based on Descartes’ view, not a spin from some contemporary apologist. 👎🏻

It is possible your conclusion is right, but just because you believe it to be so, does not make it real.

Reason for Christianity is that Assyrians are alive. Assyrians believed God before Christianity came to be. They picked up Christianity bc it was rational for them to do so since the similarities were unquestionable. The origin of Christianity is Semitic, thus from Assyrians. So they technically accepted Christianity before Christ. So it was rational for them to adopt it.

Great explanation. The very end of the video took me for a spin though. I think people would take christains more seriously if only they were as clear and concise as this video. I'm afraid I am an empircist myself. I wish had the aptitude for making accurate deductions and inferences from little or no evidence. Unfortunately, whenever I do someone I love always gets hurt
