I have to admit that I kind of despaired when Michael Hedges first introduced tapping to the guitar in the 1980s. It's not that the tapping technique itself can't sound nice ounce in a while, it's that you're forced to play in open tunings to such an extent that inevitably the 'songs' sound the same from beginning to end. The problem is a bit like playing in DADGAD but not trying to sound like DADGAD - it's almost impossible. The result sounds very academic sounding and very samey among all of today's proponents of guitar tapping to my ear - no matter what custom tuning they're using. It looks and often sounds impressive, but it's in fact quite an easy style to play when compared, e.g. to alternating-bass fingerstyle guitar.
