Fun fact: iodized salt helped to mitigate some long-term risks after Chernobyl nuclear incident. One long-term effect of Chernobyl is radioactive iodine that substitutes normal one and leads to thyroid cancer. In Eastern Europe (specifically Belarus and Ukraine) prophylactics of thyroid cancer is a huge deal, and most of the salt is iodized by default.

See the thing is there's a lot of people say that cutting salt on your diet helps you lose weight. Which then leads to people cutting iodized salt. for some people that's the only source of iodine they get if they don't eat a well-balanced diet.
