As a student in England some 30 years ago I was asked by my Norwegian friend that if I had a choice, whether I would wish to be born as a Chinese or a Norwegian. My immediate reply was Chinese. She was puzzled and said China was poor while Norway had the best welfare system in the world and everyone lived a rich life compared with China then. I told her if she had read Chinese history, she would have known that China had been the greatest nation in the world for centuries with a very rich civilization. Its decline was due to mismanagement. But once that was put right, China would be a world leader again. And I wanted to be a citizen of a leading and culturally rich country of the world, not that of a small nation. Thirty years on, China's achievement exceeded my expectation. China will succeed. History tells us we are right. True story.

A great video. Thank you! However, the video also claims that a Chinese citizen in the year 1946 could expect to die at 36. This is a bit misleading because Child mortality plays a prominent role is shifting the life expectancy of the population. It was common, for example, for an infant to not survive the first few harsh years of life back then. But this is not so much the case once the infant reaches the age of five or so. Therefore, the children who survived until age five can expect to live well avove 70 even back then. The reason why 1946 was characterised as low life expectancies is because of high infant mortality rate which skews the actual average age attained by the adult population.

Since China has achieved tremendous development in last 40 years, as we all know, apart from admiration everyone should consider this question: Would my country develop better and people become richer if developed in or partly in the Chinese mode? Remember that the only gauge for a nation's improvement is the development of individuals, in which term that Chinese mode is definitely an ideal developing mode. Thanks for the maker of this documentary, presenting the YouTube viewers a genuine China beyond a western discriminative eyesight.
