My two cents. Context is king, 3rd Eye Blind was not a Grunge band they were marketed as a "Pop-Alternative" band. Meaning no weird lyrics, no dark lyrics and no weird music, ala Pearl Jam, NiN, RATM and Nirvana. So in the eyes of critics, record collectors, and pop music historians, Third Eye blind wasn't to be taken too seriously. So Motley Crue was really playing second fiddle to this super accessible Alternative band, was kinda mean. It shows how low on the totem pole Motley Crue was.
