A lot of people retire early and it's a disaster. If any of these 10 things/traits describe you, just don't do it. If you're retiring at a normal retirement age most of these don't apply to you.

Hi, my name is Duane. After a career in the music industry, I retired early at 59 in 2021 with just over $500K. Soon thereafter, the stock market (and my investment portfolio) tanked. This is my early retirement journey.

Great video! I retired 7 yrs ago at 56. Lasted 8 months. I'm type A and hyper. Thought I would be hunting and fishing 3-4 days a week, but that waned. Took a job in D.C. as a legal advisor. Great gig and love it. Might work 8 more years!

I am single and retired at 61. Like you, I'm happy with just hanging out. I am debt free. Retirement is the best thing I ever did.

My first day of retirement was my 59th birthday too. After almost 39 years working in a mill, I was done!! It’s been a year and a half since I retired and I love my freedom. Stress has disappeared.

Retired at 61 from my 27 year career that was wonderful. Had 3 kids married. Made great money great perks etc…but, before the pandemic the type of business I was in was loosing its excitement. Coming back to work after pandemic my desire to stay with this job was over.
Have my real estate license sold a few places. But, even that I don’t want to put in the effort. Thought I could make it to 67. Nope.
Paid off all debt.
Started collecting at 62. Have a couple of rentals some savings.
Done. I love it. ❤

I enjoyed my job, but disliked the way the company (upper management) treated the employees. I was planning on retiring "early", but a door opened when the company decided to try to get rid of "older" employees and wanted to ship our jobs to other countries. They offered older employees a 10% incentive to leave within a short period of time. That was enough incentive to leave early.

I’m retiring at 63 next month. I’ve never heard type A people shouldn’t retire early, but you’re absolutely correct. I’m more of a quiet B type, and have gotten sick of work

My father retired at 55. Many of the things you listed applied to him. He failed at retirement and took his old job back after only 6 months. He warned me that I should not retire early. But I am a different personality than him. I retired at 54 one year ago and my wife retired 6 months ago. We have been enjoying lots of traveling and leisure activities. So far so good!

There is so much to do in life after your main work ends.

Embrace it all

Biggest determining factor for retirement-your personal debt. If one has credit card debt, car payments, personal loans still outstanding, & mortgage (depending on amount/length of remaining mortgage). One also needs to factor in insurance costs-health/home/auto. They go up almost every year. Know where you stand financially right now. It doesn’t hurt to see a retirement specialist to help you see where you are and where you need to be b4 retiring.

Retiring when you love your job is better than leaving when things go bad. It’s called retiring on your terms. There is no better time to retire than when you are very happy! Otherwise, you’ll be resentful. I loved my job but life and control of my time was more valuable than working was.

Excellent video, Duane. Ever heard of "Murphy's Law"? "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." If you want to have a great retirement, you have to plan and prepare yourself to handle "Murphy's Law". I don't mean that you'll be dealing with Murphy's Law on a daily basis, but life happens when you are planning something else. Fill those coffers, live below your means, get out of debt and stay out of debt, and take time to smell the roses. That's a good retirement.

I retired 44 from active duty USAF as a Major, and was also rated at 60% disability for a variety of manageable issues. Combined I make about $80K from the retirement and VA disability, all tax free in my state, and VA is tax free federally. I pay less than $600 per year for medical and dental too through Tricare. I worked for another 5 years, then gave up working full-time before I turned 50. After one year of house projects, I got bored and took a job driving a school bus 30 hours per week, with nights, weekends, holidays, and Summers off. My house is paid off and I have zero debt. I'm very happy with my work/life balance now
