Moderator:
Tim Pohlmann, CEO at LexisNexis IPlytics
Panel:
John Han, SVP and GM at Qualcomm Technology Licensing
John Kolakowski, Director, Licensing at Nokia Technologies
Ran Xu, GM of Corporate IP Strategy at Xiaomi

New industries and new technologies come with new challenges and complexities in industrial value chains, indemnifications, and market expectations. On top of that a geopolitical competition of governments emerges with proposals to locally regulate global markets. Such challenges have however triggered new creative ideas on how SEPs are licensed and what is needed so that both licensors and licensees join pools and platforms and enter bilateral agreements. This panel discussed the new frontiers of SEP licensing. In particular, the panel discussed the promise of “growth area” SEP licensing models (IoT, CE, multimedia); new licensing revenue streams (e.g. licensing at the service layer, such as in DivX v Netflix; Avanci Video and others; and emerging venues of SEP licensing disputes including India and South America. This panel brought together some of the most respected SEP licensing experts to discuss the future of SEP licensing.
Topics discussed in the panel included:
How to deal with new industry verticals, new royalty rate price points, complex value chains and different market expectations to facilitate SEP licensing.
How to deal with new emerging venues of SEP licensing disputes including India and South America.
Are pools the solution to all challenges? Pools and platforms have gained momentum and companies that never joined pools before are now founding members.
How may regional regulation harm or benefit the current system? What will the geopolitical impact be?
