In Igbo mythology, the Ogbanje are spirits that cause a child to die, and reincarnate just to die again. The Ogbanje is a mischief maker in the spirit world that sneaks into the world of the living through the womb of a woman. But there is more to the Ogbanje than what is popularly known, as many are walking among us today.

Ogbanje is like Abiku in IFA/Yoruba tradition. They are not evil, they are discarnate spirits/energies that come back through the birth of "a child who 'comes to 'die'".

I am an ogbanje, it comes up anytime I go for a reading or divination. I see my astral mates in my dreams occasionally

Thank you for making this video! I use this to aid in teaching Akwaeka Emezi's "Freshwater". It would be wonderful if you could incorporate accurate subtitles for students who are hard of hearing.

This is very insightful. It is simular to the concept of Egbe and Abiku in Yoruba. This has deepened my understanding of this. Thank you.

This was quite revealing and a joy to listen to. Never heard anyone talk about Ogbanje so positively.

I really love this episode. I have always wanted to understand the Ogbanje, there is this misconception that dismisses it as sickle cell anaemia. But I have always argued that its more than just that. Its way deeper. Thanks.

Do you think Fela was an Ogbanje? It seems to fit. This was such an eye opening video and I'm glad that such topics can be found in our culture

Hetep, sadly since I just returned from Enugu to view the Nsude pyramids which were in such deplorable condition I not sure if that was even them. Also since it was so difficult to find locals that even knew what I was speaking of has convinced me most Igboos dont even want to be are care to be and been taught to not care anything for their history. Which is why more and more say they Hebrew and not African at all.

This one was so deep. The only reference I had read regarding ogbanje was in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. This clarified so much.

Thanks for your teaching on this subject; it really explains why certain ones express themselves in a particular way. The end of this video seemed to have ended prematurely for some reason.
Always insightful to hear what you have to say about Igbo cosmology and Spirituality.

Peace 🙏

In Yoruba they're known as emere or Omo elegbe. Most times miss interpreted by over religious people as bad or possessed set of people.

I wonder if there is a link with Ogbanje and (mental) illness like Autism, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, etc.?
